Happyland–Instructions for Happiness 

This time, the summer workshop will be showing in six empty shops and an office floor in Frankfurt / Oder. The ‚Große Scharrnstraße‘ is the still visible architectural shell of a vanished socialist ‘GlücksUtopie‘ (utopia of happiness) . This street was to re- present the socialist feeling of life of the population and was to prove that good quality of living is also possible in a concrete block. The pursuit of happiness as the legitimate impulse to social and material realities. Intoxication, repression, addiction and consumption are confused with supposedly achieved bliss. Happyland has in its contradiction for us end morons symbol and object character. The art project transforms the abandoned shops and rooms of the Große Scharrnstraße into a chain of stores in Happyland. The artistic intervention deals with various happiness concepts and gives a kind of guidance to happiness.

Diese Straße sollte das neue sozialistische Lebensgefühl der Bevölkerung repräsentieren und den Beweis antreten, dass gute Wohnqualität auch in der Platte möglich sei. Das Streben nach Glück als berechtigter Antrieb des menschlichen Handelns steht im Spannungsverhältnis zu sozialen und materiellen Realitäten. Rausch, Verdrängung, Sucht und Konsum werden verwechselt mit vermeintlich erreichter Glückseligkeit.
Happyland hat in seiner Widersprüchlichkeit für uns Endmoränen Symbol- und Objektcharakter. Das Kunstprojekt verwandelt die verlassenen Läden und Räume der Großen Scharrnstraße in eine Ladenkette von Happyland. Der künstlerische Eingriff beschäftigt sich mit verschiedensten Glücksvorstellungen und gibt eine Art Anleitung zum Glücklichsein.
